"but we also had Hubert Humphrey, Adlai Stevenson, Barry Goldwater, and other politicians of true integrity and honesty." None of them were able to get elected. The last "nice guy" we had in the White House was Jimmy Carter and we remember how that turned out. A great human being, but considered a lousy president.

You forgot that even Abe observed that the key to success in politics was "faking sincerity". I think honesty in politics means something deeper than what we usually think of it. I believe one can betray one's words in politics and yet remain honest! Go watch the movie "The President" again if necessary. It gave an answer in there.
