Stops are crucial IMO. Based on my experience the first mistake is usually the least costly.

I have to agree that stops are useful. As it relates to the whole trading strategy and knowing where you want to exit, they can be lifesavers. If I had shown a little more discipline (using pre-determined stops to protect capital) and less emotion (i.e. - stop falling in love with stocks!), I'd be doing even better now.
