Irreparable harm is a standard legal requirement for getting a stay of a lower court order.

the argument basically was that if you did the hand recounts and they put Gore ahead and he got the electors and became President and then after all the appeals were finished the court declared the hand recounts illegal for any of a variety of reasons, the harm to Bush would be irreparable because you couldn't turn back the clock and make Bush president.

Whether you agree or not, it's a reasonable argument to make.
