I don't know how many shares they'll have to buy, but it won't be too much. PDL has a tiny weight in the total index, so they won't need much. However, given that the stock isn't the most active trader in the world, any increase in demand will be useful, and mildly profitable. The wildcard is whether or not the underwriters (Nesbitt, DS, Scotia et al) dump their bonus shares into the strength. That could limit any rally.

I almost got my clock cleaned trying to make money on JDSU when it went into the S&P 500, I thought it was easy money. Then their largest shareholder (a Japanese company, Furukawa I think) dumped a ton of stock on inclusion day. The stock didn't budge because of all the excess supply. It taught me to remember the price is a function of demand and supply.
