The Taliban are an extremist sect forcing its own standard not on those who agree with it, but on those who don't.

You could substitute "Christian Right" or "Zionists" or a variety of other groups into this sentence in place of Taliban, and it would still be true. There is no way to reason extremists of any kind out of it, because they KNOW they are right. They believe it and no amount of data or evidence can prove them wrong.

AJ apparently has it in his mind that the Taliban isn't that bad and it isn't any of our business. I find that I agree with him on one point: it won't change quickly.

Perhaps raining Playboys down on them would only provoke more hostility. To minimize the harm the Taliban can do, I think we need to be vocally opposed to them whenever we can. We must speak out. Let them defend their practices in the court of public opinion. They won't be able to. The second thing we need to do is prevent them from entrenching, so the criticism needs to balanced with financial, political and other rewards for easing of restrictions. We should encourage cultural innoculation from western culture. People that do this are not without risk though. I'm not sure I'm up to the challenge.

The Taleban did not arrive on earth by reverse osmosis, they sprang from the loins of Taleban mothers.

Would the world be a better place if they were obliterated?
Send them back to Allah in body bags? What do you think their mothers, daughters and sisters would have to say about that.

"The Taliban are an extremist sect forcing its own standard not on those who agree with it, but on those who don't"

And the Communists used to say:

"The Americans are an evil people forcing their culture not on those who agree with it, but on those who don't."

and Americans used to say:

The Communists are an evil people forcing their socialistic ideals not on those who agree with it, but on those who don't."

And it goes on and on and on forever...

Innocent victims of any totalitarian regime should be given immediate refuge in a safe place away from persecution. It might interest you to know that due to liberal immigration policy there are few safe places left in northern and western Europe for Taleban victims.
