Greg we were going to be divided no matter what they did. 2-4 years of partisan gridlock to come. Frankly, I like gridlock.

>>"Bush goes down as running out the clock"<<

Perhaps Gore goes down as failing to ask for a statewide recount and ask for statewide standards the day after the election. Trying to win a national election by cherry picking Democratic strongholds for additional votes freed Pandora & allowed the chaos machine to run amuck.

Gore choose the wrong path from the get go & made wrong turns at every juncture, IMVHO.

Bush won the original & state required recount. He had absolutely no reason to protest/contest anything. All he needed to do was to work to see that the Rule of Law was followed. IMVHO, Bush did exactly that.

People are going to continue to live with their personal bias & their perception of this event will be their reality...... regardless of the facts.

That's my story & I'm sticking to it.

Nah, it was Gore who ran out the clock. Remember, he's the one who convinced the FL Extremes to extend the first (protest) deadline, which necessarily cut into the second (contest) deadline. His own dam** fault, and everyone will realize it eventually.

A reminder to us all: Be careful in what you ask for, because you might get it.

Greg, I agree with your assessment that Bush was trying to run out the clock. However, the standards issue in counting was a real problem too. If all counties used the Palm Beach standard, there was no way Gore had a chance.
Under that standard, Bush would have won.

However, it is still sad to see the USSC Justices to have to do this. I think they were more interested in preventing constitutional crisis than applying the law. The majority opinion was just looking for a way out....and under the circumstances they did the right thing for the country's sake. To extend it would have made it into a bigger mess (thanks the FLA legislature's threats).

I have not been impressed by the Republicans in their public comments. They seem to be some sort of extremists...including the FLA legislature.
(no offense to my Republican friends on SI)

I bet the Democrats will show they can be reasonable; expecting Gephardt and others to be welcoming Bush.
Maybe deep down they realize, the tide will turn towards the Democrats (among the public) thanks to this mess.

In any case, I think it is the right decision under the tough circumstances.
