Supply fear raises palladium price

THE PRICE of palladium, a key raw material for car manufacturers, surged to a fresh record high yesterday on continuing fears that Russia, the largest producer, is withholding supplies to boost profits. It rose to $940 (pounds 650) a troy ounce, exceeding the $915 high set on Monday. It first hit a peak a week ago as rumours started of a supply shortage. Russia produces about two-thirds of the world's palladium - mainly used in catalysts to reduce noxious gases from exhausts - and supplies have been erratic since 1997. "I still think it's mainly speculators ... there's no doubt that scepticism about Russian material remains high and there's good reason for that," Kamal Naqvi, an analyst at Macquarie, said.
