Alexander the Great while marching somewhere wrote to his tutor Aristotle to complain he should never have published his philosophical system. Aristotle wrote back and said that his philosophical system would not be understood and putting it to parchment was meant to be a testament or encomium to his life.

The leading civilization at the time was Greece, everything was written and discussed in Greek, nothing could be lost in a translation and Aristotle states that unless he personally taught the student his system would not be understood. Maybe Aristotle was trying to appease Philip because of the amount of money expended on tutoring his young son Alexander. Or perhaps the text is really only part of the meaning and the impact of the tutor is the other part.

Alex must have been fuming as he kicked Bucephalus on towards India that he would have a new swarm of philosophers to deal with when he returned to Macedonia.

The writings of Aristotle were not lost on Augustine when he wrote the City of God. Aristotle via Augustine was a larger influence on the Catholic Church than Christ.

To split hairs over the words extinction and extinguish is irrelevant. We can't know what Buddha really meant unless we are witness to an example of it.
