I'm arguing that there is no convincing national mandate for a strong turn in the conservative direction, and
suggesting that it might be appropriate for Bush to develop a more moderate program of government than that outlined in his campaign.

Agree. At the present time there is no mandate by either candidate. I think there is practically no debate on this issue. So, while your argument is sound, don't be surprised if you find no one to disagree with you.

Bush, even without a mandate, is not one that I would label as being along the extreme right. He would have reached out to Democrats regardless of the election results, but will now do so more strenuously in light of the close election not only to build a workable political base, but also to heal the country following this divisive period.

I'm not arguing in support of Al Gore. I'm arguing that there is no convincing national mandate for a strong turn in the conservative direction, and suggesting that it might be appropriate for Bush to develop a more moderate program of government than that outlined in his campaign.

I think a moderate course would have been Bush's even without the close election. That is just the way he operates. I am very much looking forward to a course of moderation the next 4 years. Maybe the center in the House and Senate can come together and pass legislation in spite of the protests from the left and right.

I predict that Bush is going to surprise a lot of people. He will govern from the middle and be a real leader. The time is right for a president like Bush.
