I wasn't criticizing the use of these, just the necessity. It may be necessary on a personal basis but not on a theological basis. Something fragrant does change the ambience of an environment, but something that smells good to one person (making them feel ethereal) make another nauseated.

I wouldn't criticize any mechanism that people use to bring themselves to truth. But I don't confuse the mechanism with the Truth they are trying to discover.

Perhaps the same was true for burnt offerings, but I can't speak to that out of my own personal experience (except on a few unfortunate romantic occasions, LOL!, but that's another story entirely...).
