Yes, they loved Drinan. The Berrigans were widely regarded as heroes, Sloan Coffin mostly got good press, and everyone loved the nuns who opposed US policy in Central America. It is not just a matter of deference to black culture. The sanctuary movement, centered on churches, was a very strong component of radical culture in the 80s; St. John the Divine, in New York, is a center of liberal chic; and the Dalai Lama is widely admired in liberal Democratic circles. The Religious Left, or those perceived to be compatible with "alternative culture", is given a pass. It is only the Religious Right that is vilified as aspiring to impose religious values upon us.......
