About four companies are making VOD servers. Two are public. SeaChange(SEAC) and Concurrent Computer(CCUR).
The other two private companies are Diva and nCube.
Diva(DVTV) has been trying to go public but missed the
hot IPO wagon train. nCube is run by ORCL's Larry E.

Todate:
Timewarner is using SEAC and CCUR.
Cox is using CCUR.
Cablevision is using SEAC.
AT&T is using Diva.
Charter is using Diva.

Interactive TV Ready to Take Off, Revolutionizing TV Usage

Number of Households Utilizing iTV Expected to Total 41 Million By 2005

WASHINGTON, Oct. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Interactive TV (iTV) is about to become a reality, according to a new study released by The Strategis Group. The study, Interactive TV: Platforms, Content, and Services, projects that the majority of U.S. households will be iTV capable and active usage will reach over 41 million in 2005.

''As operators continue to upgrade their networks to digital and interactive capability, and content providers prepare for widespread deployment of interactive products and services, the pieces are being put in place to take iTV mainstream in the coming years,'' said Keith Kennebeck, analyst with The Strategis Group. ''iTV has the potential to revolutionize the way we use our televisions -- we'll be able to order products, access information, get movies and chat with friends with the click of a remote.''

iTV growth is expected to be fueled by consumer demand for interactive services, such as Video on Demand (VoD) and television-based commerce (T-commerce), and by cable, digital broadcast satellite (DBS) and digital broadcast operators' desire to tap new revenue sources. According to a recent Strategis Group survey, 24% of consumers are very or extremely interested in VoD, while 12% are very or extremely interested in T-commerce. ''This survey data reveals that not all consumers are currently ready to embrace interactive services because iTV has not yet demonstrated its value. This will change quickly if consumer experience shows Interactive television to be a entertaining and useful service,'' says Ty Cottrill of The Strategis Group.

All of the major cable multiple-system and DBS operators have demonstrated their interest in providing interactive services over broadband networks and digital set-top boxes. Terrestrial broadcasters are also expected to enter the iTV fray as digital broadcasting proliferates in the coming years. Cable and DBS operators are counting on revenues from interactive services to augment their traditional video service revenues. VoD alone is expected to generate $2.6 billion in incremental revenue for cable operators by 2005.

Digital Set-Tops to Generate $21B
Oyster Bay, N.Y. -- Spurred by the cable and satellite industries, the digital set-top-box market will become a $21 billion market by 2005 as the global installed base of the equipment grows from 1999's 44 million to 339 million, forecasted Allied Business Intelligence Inc.

Allied noted that the spurt in installations will increase in part because as new feature sets are added, the set-top box is evolving to become the epicenter of convergence between the entertainment, computing and broadband industries.

Although direct-broadcast satellite accounted for 76 percent of all digital boxes deployed by the end of last year, cable is poised to cut into that number significantly, eventually outselling satellite boxes on its way to snaring 40 percent of the global market by 2005, Allied said.
