By definition, a gorilla doesn't give way to a monkey that has a niche product. Are you saying that AMD has a discontinuous innovation, around which a value chain will form, thereby unseating the purported Gorilla Intel?

When you define a Gorilla as it cannot be de-throned througout lifetime without another disruptive technology, than Intel is not a Gorilla. Has never been then, because we are watching at least the possibilty at the moment. (Hey, TRFM is a very good set of ideas, it is not the condensed wisdom of mankind and is always subject to be proven against reality. Even Moore can err).

AMD is Intels monkey, but maybe successfully enough to make a King out of the Gorilla. IMHO Intel is losing its ability to sustain Gorilla status because it is losing their OPA being industry standard. AMD is not a niche product anymore.

OTOH I think the movement to 64Bit architecture will redistribute the bananas again.

In the interest of an orderly zoo, niche product offerers are defined as Chimps. Monkeys offer compatible products.

That would make Transmeta Intel's Chimp, and AMD Intel's Monkey.

Your point is correct. Gorillas don't give way to Monkeys. They just change the rules of the game and take all the bananas they want.
