Using book value based measures on a historical basis just does not make sense anymore. Our economy has changed considerably since the 60s, with intangible assets making up a significant part of the value of assets today. Book values do not adequately reflect the value of these intangible assets. This point renders the central thesis of the article to be invalid. I am surprised that a "chief economist" would endorse such a thesis.
