One more thing Japan had going for it was a booming global economy to export to, throughout the post-Bubble era. Contrast this to the complete collapse in global trade that U.S. had to deal with in the 1930s. IMHO, that is the sole reason Japan has had such a mild Kondratieff winter compared to the Great Depression.

Japan had a high savings rate, trade surplus, a real gov't surplus. TL & EV ignores national boundaries -g-

This is exactly what is happening to the surplus. So much for all those great government predictions of massive surpluses for X number of years...
