What you are forgetting LoF is that if they went for a statewide re-count it would have to have been fair. In that case Bush still wins. I think they knew that, and that's why they pushed ahead with their unfair selective counts. Think about it. If the US SC did not get involved (which many on both sides thought would be the case) Gore would have very possibly won. They now still have the whole public sympathy thing, which they would not have had with a fair statewide recount. Either way Gore looses, but the other would not have allowed for the trashing of GWB's tenure that is still ongoing.
