it would be pretty silly for the Clawhammer to have 64 bit addressing internally but 32 bits externally.

I believe Athlon allows 43 bit addresses I believe, but the chipset have their own memory limit that may be well below the theoretical maximum. For example, BX chipset I believe allowed only 512 or 1 GB of memory, even though P6 can address 4 GB.

Clawhammer can have a long and successful life with exposing only a subset of the 64 bit address.
