Read a bit further in the majority opinion... I saw explicit discussion about testimony where 3 different individuals derived different opinions about the legality of specific votes. And that they saw that as convincing evidence that "clear intent of the voter" was being violated... and thus, the equal protection provisions of the constitution.

Although I haven't finished reading the opinion, my first reaction to your wish for a better explanation from the Supreme Court can be summed up as, "Haste makes waste." They usually take weeks or months to hand down rulings, and personally, I can forgive them for not producing as polished a result as they normally would, considering the extremely limited time available to them.

Besides, the net result in the long run may well be that they have come out for the principle that election re-counts must be conducted fairly. That can't be a bad thing.
