It occurs to me that this is a powerful weapon to keep party members in the fold. Nobody wants to be "excommunicated" from a group they identify with, but if you hold conservative beliefs you can't be black! That's quite a grip to put on someone.

Your mention of Margaret Thatcher reminds me that polarization between left and right is not new.

I think one thing that would help would be for Rush Limbaugh to tone down the attacks. Not that Rush would listen to me, being outrageous gives him an audience. -g-
