Kenneth - This Aerie:NT deal was announced in mid-Oct. As a holder of both NT and Q, Q being a competitor of Aerie, I decided to refresh my recollection of the deal and of Aerie. Extracts from CNNfn's 17 Oct 2000 news on the deal and from the public part of Hoovers online company capsule on Aerie appear below.

Regards,
Harry

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - [snip Sybase, etc.]

*Nortel scores $1B optical deal*

Nortel Networks Corp. (NT: Research, Estimates) said it has struck a four-year $1 billion optical equipment and services deal for Aerie Networks' 20,000-mile nationwide U.S. broadband network.

Under the agreement, Nortel, the world's second-largest telecom equipment maker, said the maximum financing it expects to provide will not be worth more than 50 percent of the contract value at any one time.

Aerie Networks plans to offer services to 194 U.S. cities along more than 8.9 million miles of fiber. That will allow Aerie to sell network space and services to carriers, service providers, and local access and metropolitan area network providers.

Aerie Networks' name belies the density of its planned backbone. The company is constructing a high-capacity fiber-optic network that will span 20,000 miles, connecting almost 200 cities across the US. By offering a huge supply of bandwidth (435-strand fiber-optic cable), it intends to provide capacity at lower costs to local-exchange carriers, content providers, ASPs, ISPs, and integrated communications providers. Sempra Communications and 11 pipeline companies have given Aerie Networks their rights-of-way to construct its network in exchange for a combined 25% stake. VantagePoint Venture Partners owns 29% of Aerie; management owns 29%. Formed in 1999, the company plans to complete its network in 2004.
