Where do you get that this is a Democratic state? Even those who call themselves Democrats are mostly Republican and vote mostly Republican. This has been a Republican state for a very long time. Years ago, they used to call themselves Conservative Democrats because they didn't think they had a chance to win if they called themselves Republicans since the Republican party was not organized enough. As soon as the Republican party became sufficiently organized, many of them began running as Republicans. How many times have you seen Texas go Democratic in the national elections. Even when Kennedy ran, he had to bring Johnson in so that he could carry Texas.
