lcatel Optronics unveils the most advanced high bit-rate optical
pre-amplifier available on the market
For the very first time a high bit-rate optical pre-amplifier couples compact
size and high performance

Paris, December 14, 2000 - Alcatel Optronics(Paris: CGO.PA and NASDAQ: ALAO), leading
supplier of opto-electronic devices for optical telecommunications, today introduced its Alcatel
1907 OFA(Optical Fiber Amplifier), a compact pre-amplifier dedicated to high bit-rate
telecommunications applications such as optical cross-connects, metropolitan networks, and
DWDM(Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) systems. This compact and advanced
pre-amplifier will enable systems designers to build highly competitive optical networks at
reduced cost.

To answer the ever-growing bandwidth demand created by the Internet, telecommunication
systems use more and more channels to increase optical network capacity. The multiplication
of the quantity of components used to meet this demand requires space optimization and
optical components miniaturization. To meet this challenge, Alcatel Optronics has developed a
new family of Optical Fiber Amplifiers(OFA), in compact packages.

Currently available for high bit-rate(2.5 Gbit/s, 10 Gbit/s and 40 Gbit/s) pre-amplification
applications, the new compact pre-amplifier Alcatel 1907 OFA features improved optical and
electrical performance, reducing the noise factor to typical 5 dB(which directly impacts the
quality of the transmission), as well as power consumption to typical 3.5 W(which minimizes
temperature effects, increases equipment's compactness and saves costs). Composed by
several components such as doped fiber, multiplexers, isolators, couplers and pumps, its small
size, 70 x 90 x 12 mm3, is made possible by using a new miniaturized pump package.

"The Alcatel 1907 OFA pre-amplifier complements our state-of-the-art product line of
compact products which now fulfills the critical product requirements of tomorrow", stated
Philippe Brégi, Alcatel Optronics Chief Operating Officer. "This technology once again
confirms Alcatel Optronics capability to develop leading-edge opto-electronic solutions.""

Launched in September 1999, the compact booster amplifier Alcatel 1906 OFA was the first
compact product to be launched in the market.
