I picked cherries for a while when I was pregnant, having been unable to find anything else. It was horrible and exhausting, of course. A lot of the laborers were children-- whole families came to shapeup. Then I rose in society to a job behind the counter in a dime store. That one was worth it for the stories. I've dined out on it for years.
