My mother just called me crying because she feels sorry for Gore, and was complaining about blacks being disenfranchised by rickety machines. I asked her what did she think would have happened if Gore had asked for a statewide manual recount using reasonable standards five weeks ago? What if he hadn't focused on the butterfly ballot, which was a loser from the start> What about the Hispanics he wanted to disenfranchise in Miami-Dade? What about the fact that Palm Beach county is the third richest county in the country? What about the military and absentee ballots he tried to get thrown out?

I don't think I changed her mind but she changed the subject.
