Not everyone changes. My mother is still a liberal. So are my sister's inlaws. Be true to your beliefs, but respect the beliefs of others, and no one will ask anything more.

But these opinions I have of our Nation were formed
because they strike a chord deep in my stomach,

I don't doubt that. And I hope they stay there.

But how deep do they strike? Deep enough to go to jail for, the way some of us in the civil rights movement did? (Three times, in my case, though never convicted or even arraigned. Just arrested, jailed, knocked around a bit by redneck guards who bitterly resented the Northern jew-boys (though I'm not the least Jewish) comin' down and tellin' them how to treat their niggers, and released as soon as the attorneys could get there. Nothing to boast about -- we, after all, could go home while the blacks were stuck there for the rest of their lives. And nothing like the sacrifice Goodwin, Schwerner and Cheney made. But don't think that those of us now older didn't have convictions every bit as deeply rooted as yours and every bit as deep in the heart of our being.

I still believe in the principles I believed in then. But what has changed is my belief in the best way to achieve those principles societally. And what else has changed is that I realize that the best way for me to make those principles come true is to raise a family that believes in the same principles, become a contributor to society, and help others become contributors to society. I believe that the basic principles of the Republican party are better for all the people of our country, in the long term, than the principles of the Democratic party.

I hope we're both still on SI in thirty years when you have three children you have loved, and housed, and fed, and provided braces for, and cared for, and spent your weekends taking to little league game, and worked to provide a good home and upbringing for and now are workig to put through college, and then we can discuss whether you're still in the same place as you are now.

But having three children in college, I know perfectly well that they not only don't want to but won't and probably can't learn the lessons I've learned until they live through the things I've lived through. So while it's sometimes frustrating to watch them make mistakes I know are mistakes and I could save them from if they would only listen to me and realize that Father Knows Best, nonetheless I also know that they have to be who they are and learn these lessons the hard way, and there's nothing I can do to make learning the lessons any easier except to be there when they really need me in the ways they really need me to be there.

So that's what's now striking the chord deep in MY stomach.
