President-elect Bush pledges to 'heal our country' CNN.com George W. Bush addressed the nation for the first time tonight as president-elect, pledging to work with Democratic candidate Al Gore to "heal our country after this hard-fought contest." Bush spoke from the Texas House of Representatives, which he used as a symbol for bipartisanship. "The spirit of cooperation I have seen in this hall is what is needed in Washington." Bush's remarks came about an hour after Gore ended his five-week political and legal battle for the presidency and called on Americans to unite behind Bush. "I say to President-elect Bush that what remains of partisan rancor must now be put aside, and may God bless his stewardship of this country."
