Sun says moves to second place in server market
SAN FRANCISCO, Dec 13 (Reuters) - Sun Microsystems Inc. (NasdaqNM:SUNW - news) moved into second place in the global market for computer servers in the third quarter, the company said on Wednesday.

Sun said it overtook Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE:HWP - news) and Compaq Computer Corp. (NYSE:CPQ - news)), moving from fourth to second place in overall revenue, quoting figures from International Data Corp (IDC).

Sun's sales for servers running the UNIX operating system, the biggest piece of the market, rose 63 percent while unit sales grew 100 percent, leaving it with 48 percent of worldwide UNIX shipments, it said.

The total UNIX market grew 20 percent in units and value, Sun said.

International Business Machines Corp.(NYSE:IBM - news), number one in the server market, said separately that the IDC data show it grew faster than Sun in the sector of the market for mid-range UNIX servers costing between $100,000-$1 million.

But overall IBM UNIX server revenues grew just 17 percent versus the 63 percent growth for Sun, IDC said.

``Overall in the UNIX market, Sun is clearly the leader thus farm,'' said IDC analyst Vernon Turner.

Dear Chic: I dont think there will be a recession in 2001. Already the "talking" heads are calling for reduction in interest rates, reduction in taxes and other things to SPUR the economy. AG may not like it but we just had an election and ALL the politicos will want to have a good year this year. The pressure will be unrelenting to FIX this economy (even if it doesnt need fixed-(gg) As to bonds and all that, that can change overnight with the stroke of a pen. JDN
