I used to be a guardian ad litem for the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court. In cases involving children, sometimes the court appoints a guardian at litem because the parents are not acting in the best interest of the child. I am not a very patient person, I have little tolerance for dysfunctional and destructive behavior, so I had to quit doing it.

For someone with patience and compassion, there is the CASA program, where you can volunteer to be something like a guardian at litem without being a lawyer. Helping kids survive dysfunctional families without becoming dysfunctional themselves is the most important thing I can think of to end these social problems. But they won't end, even Jesus said, "the poor we will always have with us."
