like what the Brits did during the Opium War 100 yrs ago ....that's the true bad color of capitalism.

Two years ago I helped a seventh grader with a paper on the origins of the Opium wars. Unlike you, he knows something about the subject.

Those wars were not a result of the "true bad color of capitalism". They were a (now) indefensible reaction to the drain on British silver bullion reserves, when the protectionist Chinese wouldn't allow reciprocal trade to compensate for Western European demand for tea and silk.

Things are not so simple as the simple think.

Nobody in Asia wants war, as it is bad for local businesses.

No one wants outright conflict, but economic war is taking place right now with regard to which sphere of influence Asia falls within, the US, or an emerging China.

Japan used to rule the roost over there, but has been so severely weakened economically, they are losing influence to the growing economies.

So while people aren't dying enmasse, economic and cultural war rages. And the cultural aspect of that war of ideas and market economics is probably our most effective
"weapon" against the Chinese.

But it's a weapon that is fairly benign since it is founded in legal aspects of freedom of choice and opportunity. It's a war between economic hegemony and economic opportunity.

Regards,

Ron

Btw, this is what Chinese govt leaders fear most, but are unable to stop:

asia.dailynews.yahoo.com

The paparazzis are going after gay chinese entertainers now... but what happens when they start going after corrupt government leaders?

Going to be tough to put the genie back into the bottle...
