Mike, there is ALWAYS intelligence that is mishandled or ignored. I have personal experience with that during the Czech invasion. We all know about the contribution of the aircraft carrier now, but almost no Naval thinkers thought it was more important than the battleship in 1941. In fact, it was America's necessity to make carriers work that turned them into the decisive weapon.

The ammo supply is always inadequate in peacetime, as is everything else, especially when one major party was isolationist and wouldn't vote a nickle for military appropriations. When I was in the Army, nearly every piece of equipment had a yellow "waiting for parts or repairs" sticker on it. We gerry-rigged them and operated anyway, but I don't think anyone would accuse Tricky Dick or LBJ of trying to lure the Russians into attacking.

At the start of the war, our airborn torpedoes did not explode when they hit a ship, something you wouldn't think those who foresaw aircraft carrier dominance would allow.

No, the Pearl Harbor silliness is just conspiracy crapola. It was a huge snafu that no leader would allow if he'd known in advance. In perfect hindsight, we know that when put to the test, America's military proved superior and able to fight on both fronts. But neither Roosevelt nor anyone else had perfect foresight.

I know for a fact that Dusko Popov, the model for James Bond, had info on the Pearl Harbor attack, but Hoover would not accredit anything he said due to the fact that he was a fornicator (with women, a real sin for Jedgar <g>) Instead of giving him a medal, Hoover had him arrested for crossing the state line with actress Simone Simone of "The Cat People."
