techplayer,

You really like to twist the facts, don't you.

It may well be true that the EdgeDirector was innovative technology, and that when Ciena bought Omnia it had no customers. But your statement that it had no potential customers is preposterous. The edge access market is immense. The EdgeDirector had a good shot at it.

The EdgeDirector's market failure, as I understand it, had more to do with the radically new technology used, as opposed to familiar SONET technology such as that used by Cerent and Siara. The market embraced the Cerent concept and rejected the EdgeDirector concept. (Siara's box is also doing quite well under Redback's ownership.)

"It was a classic case of engineering trying to drive the process rather than determining actual customer needs."

I see you like playing monday morning quarterback.

The companies and technologies that will succeed in this market of very high innovation rate are those that correctly determine the market direction, and innovate. If they wait for the customers to tell them what they need, they will surely be riding in the back seat.

You really need a new handle.
