Grace.....Both Video Tape formats (VHS & Beta) were proprietary. Something can become a quasi-standard because of market adoption, not because it went into a committee and was agreed to by a plethora of company representatives. VHS became a standard via market adoption (re: sales). Panasonic, Quasar, RCA, JVC, Magnavox, etc. pushed the right consumer marketing buttons and won themselves the crown. Microsoft Windows is proprietary, but is also standard. Unix is also a standard, although there are a few flavors (Linux, Berkeley Unix, etc)....(LOL). Steve
