I will respond to your allegation of a non-response. You wrote: "If you were (sane and) a Reagan or a Goldwater Republican, or a Libertarian, would your union allow you their platform to publicize your reasoning and views? Why do I doubt it?"

Wrong again, George. Teamsters endorsed Reagan for president in '80 and '84 and endorsed Bush Sr. in '88. They endorsed Clinton in '92 and made no endorsement in '96. They endorsed Gore this year. Both Bush and Gore fought hard for Teamsters endorsement this year. So don't give me the line about Repubs somehow morally superior to unions. That's elitist crap.

To reiterate, three Teamster endorsements for GOP, two for Dems, in past two decades.

Re: "They steer the self interest of their membership toward adopting political prescriptions that are fatally flawed." More GOP jingoistic language.

What's fatally flawed about raising the minimum wage so single moms with two kids might be able to afford health insurance?
What's fatally flawed about increasing workplace safety standards?
What's fatally flawed about protecting workers' pension plans from greedy mid-level corporate weasels in suits?
What's fatally flawed about exercising a legal right to organize?

Here's a novel idea for you, George: Maybe I vote Democrat because of The Issues. Maybe I vote Democrat because the Dems care about protecting pension plans and the Republicans don't.

I suppose you supported what Wal-Mart did a few months ago. Suits at corporate HQ caught wind that the meatcutters were trying to organize and they fired all 160 (or however many).

Problem solved.

Yeah. That's the way to do it.

It's getting to be a waste of time replying to a good many people on this board with "the facts."
