Any thoughts as to why Microsoft chose DDR for the X-Box?

Nope. I'm not a gamer.

But speaking generally, the X-box is not expected in large volumes for a year. It's not clear what advantage, if any, it will have over P2, which plays games, acts as a DVD player, and can provide internet access.

Further, Sony has been producing electronic hardware for a little while now (decades). Whereas MSFT is not known for its hardware. I think the probability that MSFT is going to hit a home run with their first hardware product, against a Sony-designed and produced device, is remote.

The real question is, will MSFT even stroke a base hit with the X-box?
