<<Personally I think that a few rolling blackouts will be required before most Californians really understand the magnitude of the problem. Heck, just
turn off the power to the entire state for a day. That will get some results and conservation. >>>

Exactly my thoughts:
The CA energy problem gets play on the local news pretty much every night now, however it is never the lead story.
I've brought up the energy situation to many people in the past few days, to gauge responses:

A) Most people are completely oblivious that a problem even exists
B) Some people have heard of the supply problems, but contend that "they" will fix it. Of course without specifying who "they" are.
C) The more intelligent people, the engineers and computer professionals here in SV, are aware of the problem, but feel that it is a profiteering/gouging opportunity for energy industry players who are taking advantage of incongruities in the deregulation process.

The fact that CA has a dire shortage of power generation capacity to provide for its ever expanding population has only once been mentioned to me. No one was aware of the predicament faced by PG&E, the local utility on the verge of bankruptcy from having to pay 10-20x more for power than they are allowed to charge customers.

All this with temperatures thoughout the state normal to slightly above.

JQP. Reminds me of Michael Renne in The Day the Earth Stood Still.

Turning off the juice does get people's attention(g).
