Doren,

I am going to upgrade but I've ordered a new harddrive to put the Win2000 system on so it has less of a chance of screwing up my stuff.

I did the same (especially as I was working with beta releases). I found that all my NT4 SCSI discs were happily readable by W2000 which I had installed on an IDE disc. The nice thing about doing it this way was that I could boot from the SCSI discs if necessary to revert to NT4. Note that NTFS filing systems created under W2000 are NOT readable by NT4, but NTFS filing systems created by NT4 are readable by W2000.
