INDONESIA TO ABOLISH VAT ON GOLD BARS NEXT YEAR
Friday, December 15, 2000 12:18 AM EST
JAKARTA, Dec 15, 2000 (AsiaPulse via COMTEX) -- The Indonesian government has announced plans to abolish the value added tax (VAT) on gold bars in 2001 as part of efforts to strengthen the competitiveness of Indonesian jewelry products.

Industry and Trade Minisater Luhut B. Panjaitan said jewelry makers have complained about inability to compete against imported products because of the 10 percent VAT on gold bars.

Panjaitan said he has asked the finance minister to postpone imposing VAT on gold bars and starting January gold bars will be free from VAT.
