Peace at last - once Jesse shuts up
By Mark Steyn

Reverend Jesse L
Jackson - National
Rainbow Coalition

Bush faces a divided nation

THE war is over but not everyone is ready to sign on to Al Gore's
peace-and-reconciliation routine. Jesse Jackson - pardon me, the Reverend
Jesse Jackson, though whatever pastoral duties he bears never seem to eat
into the enormous amount of time he has to hang out in cable TV studios and
at street demos. Anyway, the Rev Jesse was on the network news again last
night, leading the crowd in his latest audience-participation riff:

Jesse: "Everyone matters!"
Crowd: "Everyone matters!"
Jesse: "Every vote counts!"
Crowd: "Every vote counts!"

I'm reminded of the old Steve Martin warm-up gag: "I will!" ("I will!") "I will
not!" ("I will not!") "I will not repeat robot fashion manipulative slogans
shouted at me from the stage!"

It seems an odd way of "empowering" someone to insist that he or she chant
along with your latest moronic jingle, but this is what the Rev Jesse does and a
very nice living he's made at it. He's now promising to continue
demonstrations up until the inauguration on January 20.

Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr, the reverend's son and a chip off the old
block, says George W Bush has "orchestrated a questionable 'velvet legal
coup' ". But by Dad's standards this was tame stuff.

Unbelievable:

"We Democrats need to be talking about what we are about, what we are for,
not what we are against," Chao said.

Shortly after the Nov. 7 election, United Press International and other
news outlets reported on efforts by Beckel to, using his word, "kidnap"
Republican electors
who are not bound by law to Republican Texas Gov. George
W. Bush and to switch them to Al Gore.

After a barrage of publicity and with Gore campaign chairman Bill Daley
and recount advisor Warren Christopher publicly disavowing his effort,
Beckel softened his tone, saying he was merely compiling information to send
to some of the Bush electors.
