Yes, the incentives played differently with different social classes. So do disincentives. I had a friend who spent a few hours in jail for shoplifting when in college, before the bail bondsman came. Getting arrested and being put in a cell was a devastating experience for her, having been brought up in a nice upper middle class household. On the other hand, I have know hard case guys from the projects who thought nothing of copping time for burglary. It didn't utterly shame them, or horrify them that they might have to live so squalidly. They were used to squalor, and doing a stint showed you were a tough guy...........
