OG,

Sure they can investment in other places...However, the easy money is gone. I am skeptical that they can pull in as much investment gains as they used to be (from the stock market). Also when the base grows larger, there is need to cash in more $$$ from investment gains. Can CSCO, and other companies keep doing so? Possible, but not very very likely.

New accounting rule was tabled... there is no change.

Gary, if I may, I believe the "new accounting rule" is awfully benign if/when it comes to pass.

It seemed to me that the only way the acquirer would be hit with the goodwill expense is if the acquired asset becomes "impaired." That new accounting rule appeared to be sweet capitulation to us bulls, if you ask me!
