Sony finds glitches in three PS2 games

TOKYO--Three software titles for the PlayStation 2 sold in Japan may malfunction on recently manufactured consoles, Sony said Friday.

The Web site of Sony's video-game unit, Sony Computer Entertainment, said three titles from three software developers including Konami may not work normally on PlayStation 2 machines that were shipped after Dec. 8.

This is the third mishap for the PlayStation 2 since it debuted in Japan in March. The 128-bit machine suffered technology glitches twice, soon after it arrived in stores. On Dec. 8, Sony introduced a new PS2 model with a remote control for the built-in DVD player. All three games work normally on earlier PlayStation 2 machines, the company said.

Konami will replace the problematic game software for free to customers who call a special service center that's been set up to take care of such complaints.

Sony will accept no financial responsibility for the replacement because the problem lies in the software, the company said.

More than 3.5 million PS2 units had been sold in Japan by the end of September. The PlayStation 2 debuted in the United States in late October.
