Sun hit with backlog in demand for UltraSparc III workstations

By Dan Neel

DEMAND FOR WORKSTATIONS powered by Sun Microsystems' UltraSparc III processor have some customers of the Palo Alto, Calif.-based computer maker on a month-long wait before their orders can be filled.

"We continue to ship the Sun Blade 1000 workstation, but not in the volume to meet the demand and the backlog to the orders," said Sun Spokesperson Larry Lettieri. "But we expect to ship in volume within the next 30 days," he said.

Introduced last September as part of the company's Net Effect strategy, the Sun Blade workstation was one of the first systems to ship with the UltraSparc III chip.

In September, officials for Sun said systems based on the UltraSparc III chip would roll out over a six- to nine-month period.
