If the axiom of choice was true, then it follows that the well ordering principle is true for any subset of real numbers.

Note as a corollary that the analog scale that governs dimpleness of a ballot can be well-ordered. Meaning that in any set containing the scale of dimpleness of a ballot, there is always a unique smallest dimple.

(vbg) WLOG, the state of dimpleness with clear intent is obviously analogous to the set of real numbers in (0,1) -- because these are the undervotes right?. (vbg)

Or perhaps, since there is a known upper bound to the number of atoms in each chad, we only need to deal with rational numbers in (0,1)? Interesting idea.

Hi Zeev - I am a logical atomism challenged individual <vbg>, so I don't know how the axiom of choice [multipicity axiom] can resolve the election thing. However, I can imagine the results from the proposed Miami Herald, NYT et al "Freedom for Information" request can plug right into the set theory model. So, you and SbH may hit the jackpot. Decades ago, a dear teacher of mine did try to convince me to use preferential ordering to resolve ethical dilemma. Being a fuzzy person that I was - still am - I have ignored such an endeavor. Instead, I tried my hand on Marty Buber's "Ich und du" with disastrous results <g>. At least, I see very little evidence of this in politics and other places. Instead, I was watching the NewsHour last night, a fella from Heritage Foundation, Chris [?] Novak, has *confirmed* the voters who picked the Republican ticket were church going individuals and those who picked the Democratic ticket were not. There we have it, the next administration has a divine mandate <VBG>!

Btw, I can see why you are such a *rascal*, since you have been *introduced* to the dark side in such a tender age <VVBG>!

best, Bosco
