A cracker is a native floridian, some add the redneck part. Florida has changed so much in the last 25 years and is so diverse I'm reluctant to even use the term anymore. So many people in SoFL weren't born here.
SE FL is very much different that central, north and the west coast of FL. Miami is another country. The FL Keys are the conch republic. A lot of FLs demographics depends which road the people come down, I-75 or I-95. One thing for sure..right now we are starting to bust at the seams...and the environment is really suffering...

Jim,

I understand that growth has caused a lot of problems for FL like it has for a lot of states experiencing a large population influx. My frustration stems from the fact that what happened was not an isolated, first time event in FL. There have been problems with elections for at least the past 10 years. Apparently 4 years ago it had gotten bad enough that the state hired an outside firm to straighten out the voter rolls and even that was not finished properly.

From what I have read and heard, my sense is that the state did not take the problem seriously enough. The result was a month of chaos and an election result that is unclear. We can complain about what is wrong in the world but at some point the complaining has to stop and the action begun or we are screwed. Its why this is called a participatory democracy.

I just hope the responsible people in the state don't let this happen again.

Edit. I forgot earlier this week I read in the WSJ about Rochester in MN. Apparently a portion of the city used the kind of scanner/computer system that I used when I took my GRE's. They were done with the vote count seventy minutes after the polls were closed and could go home. That is the system I want adopted nationwide.....and the cost is not prohibitive although I can't remember the comparison with current systems.
