By "village harpies" I mean the medicine women who perform the mutilation. The way I read a link to that article it appeared the women that perform the rite have prominent social status they won't easily relinquish. In a town of several hundred there is most likely only one or two harpies and it would not affect the community if they were removed. However if they have killed children by performing the mutilation they have to be put on trial and suffer the most severe punishment.

Education is good but combined with Americanization is better. I know Indian kids who are embarrassed by their parents milk drinking elephant statue. I don't think it is education but MTV and popular culture that caused them to turn away from their parents backward superstitions.

Popular culture aimed at Afghanistan would cause irreparable harm to the Taleban within one generation.

The best way to kill fanatics and tyrants is with laughter.
