mepci, i heard the same response about naz 2500 when the naz was 4k+. check the pe on the naz and ask yourself whether that pe is justified revenue shrinking rates that could occur in a recession. i think it will be an eye opener. but, we shall see. we could do a japan and stay in the 2k-2.5k region for a decade. valuation does matter. not yet, but it will. companies can't grow eps at 6% (and slowing!) like msft (and they are phony eps due to 1 time gain inclusion!) and trade at a 30-40 pe forever. ain't gonna happen.
