Almost 120 publicly traded companies in Taiwan cut their earnings forecasts for fiscal 2000 as the island's key stock index slid 42 percent this year, the Economic Daily News said, citing a Taiwan Stock Exchange survey.

Banks often demand repayment before the Chinese New Year holiday, which begins Jan. 19 this year, while companies and individuals are struggling to meet loan payments as the economy slows in tandem with earnings.

``Typically in Chinese New Year, liquidity dries up,'' said Cheng Yi-sheng, who helps manage $58 million in Taiwan equities at Taiwan Securities Ltd. ``It's close to the end of year and most institutions and local investors are selling stocks.''
