WILL HUNGER SPREAD..........According to the new federal study, "Measuring Food Security in the
United States," 12.9 percent of families in Texas are unable to get safe
and nutritious food - compared with a national average of 9.7 percent.

The report, prepared by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, also says
that 5 percent of Texans can be classified as "hungry," or suffering from
pain or unease caused by lack of food.

Only Oregon had a bigger percentage of hungry families, according to the
U.S. study. The national average is 3.5 percent.

Experts who have been analyzing the socioeconomic shifts in Texas over
the last few years have said that Texas remains a place where all the
elements are in place to produce a significant "hungry" populace.

"Texas is a high-poverty state, and food is one of those things that people
struggle to put on the table," said Patrick Bresette, associate director of
the Center for Public Policy Priorities, an Austin-based organization
monitoring issues affecting low-income Texans.

Good for him. Freedom of speech means nothing if one does not have the means to broadcast one's views, and mechanical equality is not "fair" if one is trying to overcome the advantages of incumbency and a biased press corps.......
