What is air interface? It is just a bunch of well defined messages, by which means what are the message fields and how big the field is and things like that. that are sent back and forth between the phone and base station. Nothing fancy about it. Strickly speaking physical layer has nothing to do with the air interface itself, although the way it operates may be dictated by the contents of the AI message it receives. All physical layer does is to send and receive the bits over the air correctly.
