It is no big deal...yet.

You might want to drop a note to Gemplus tech support for clarification.

The GCR415 that comes with a particular card reads that card that is its "mate." This is a low level reader (low cost making it a great marketing tool) that is designed to promote the issuing company (say AmEx, Visa). That is why they are tailored to the "card issuer." Once Gemplus has saturated the market, then you will be able to get a single reader that will read all. Remember ATM machines? This is how they started. It is the same model.

So don't panic.

The question is: Are they going to use EMBASSY with multiple applets on a single open and programmable platform that meters digital content (like a utility)? Gemplus already has interest in metering (notice at the Gemplus site). Imagine using your Gemplus SmartCard and Reader to meter digital content on the web!

As you know the "free web" is coming to a close. Micropayments are going to become very important. Using a SmartCard to pay for a movie or song streamed over a DSL or DTV connection is going to happen and it is what will make the web an e-commerce media. SSL is going to die. Client-side security led by Gemplus is going to rise.

Imagine downloading "Ms. Doubtfire" from Blockbuster.com. Further imagine controlling the transaction from your computer using Gemplus. Also imagine paying for the movie as you go; metered just like water or electricity. After 15 minutes you decide you don't like it, you pull out your card and the meter stops deducting. End of transaction.
